About Our President

Selected as the fifth president of Springfield Technical Community College, Dr. Ira H. Rubenzahl brings to this position a distinguished record in academic achievement, a strong focus on supporting student success, and a depth of experience in community college teaching and administration. For the past eight years he has been the president of Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in physics from MIT. He is a Woodrow Wilson Scholar, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a National Science Foundation Fellow.

President Rubenzahl has taught for nearly two decades at the college level, at Greenfield Community College, Middlesex Community College, MIT, and the Mass. College of Liberal Arts. He was a full-time faculty member at Greenfield, before serving as Dean of Academic Affairs and then Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Support there, from 1991-1996. He was responsible for increasing grant income for the institution, particularly in winning a $2.5 million Title III award. He also developed academic programs in allied health, nursing, art, media, and environmental science. He has three times been selected by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to chair accreditation teams, evaluating other colleges. He has also served on the management collective bargaining negotiating team, for the Massachusetts community college system and the Connecticut community college system.

At Capital Community College, Dr. Rubenzahl:

• organized a comprehensive strategic planning process, including a master plan for the new campus facilities
• completed a $70 million downtown Hartford campus
• initiated distance learning programs
• increased business and industry relationships with the college
• initiated academic programs in allied health, library science, computer information systems, precision manufacturing, and customer service
• increased college enrollment by 25% over four years
