CosmetologyThe Cosmetology program is designed to provide the student with the basics of the art, science, and business aspects of the cosmetology profession. The program is designed to prepare the student to become a competent, qualified professional, meeting entry-level industry standards. Students receive valuable experience practicing their skills in the STCC Cosmetology Client lab.

The course of study is a two-semester program, beginning in the fall and ending in the spring. The one-year certificate program follows the guidelines outlined by the Division of Professional Licensure, Massachusetts Cosmetology. Courses are designed as competency-based. Theory, lab and clinical are required components. After meeting course and program requirements the student will receive an application for the State Licensing Exam. After two years of employment, the graduate may apply for licensure as a Cosmetologist with the Massachusetts Board of Registration, Division of Professional Licensure, Massachusetts Cosmetology. MABD mandates a total of 1000 clock hours, these hours are broken down for each discipline to meet the MABD requirement. This is separate and distinct from the course requirements. All areas of cosmetology are taught by licensed instructors.

The applicant must be a high school graduate or have a GED. The student must have high school English grades of "C' or better. Program prerequisite: Students must place at DRDG-092 or higher on the placement test.

 

Intra-college Transfer:  Students must place at DRDG-092, DWRT-099 and/or test at ENGL-100.

Cosmetology Prerequisite Courses:

Students who do not place in DRDG-092 Reading 2 are required to enroll in this two - year curriculum track.

The Cosmetology program will produce graduates who:

  1. Have mastered techniques in performing the competencies that are related to various phases of entry-level cosmetology.
  2. Have developed a deep appreciation for cultural diversity in the salon environment, specifically as it relates to working as a team member and providing cosmetology services to clients.
  3. Value the importance of maintaining professionalism by practicing effective customer relation strategies and service skills.
  4. Maintain current certification status.
  5. Seek employment at entry level in the cosmetology profession and recognize the importance of continuing education in the field of cosmetology.

  • BIOL-102, although not required, is a good prep for BIOL-146 co requisite for the cosmetology program

Minimum Grade Requirement: A student must maintain a minimum grade of "C" (73%) in each cosmetology course. A student must meet minimum grade requirements in the tall semester in order to continue to spring semester and qualify for graduation. The related science course BIOL-146 Essentials of Human Biology 1 and SMBE-125 Introduction to Entrepreneurship, are customized for the Cosmetology program and therefore restricted to Cosmetology students. If a student fails any of the required Cosmetology courses, he/she may re-apply for the following semester that the courses are offered. Application for licensure will not be given until the hours and course requirements are met. In this case, Massachusetts Board of Registration, Division of Professional Licensure, Massachusetts Cosmetology will be notified.

Attendance Requirement: Attendance Is compulsory because of the minimum hour requirement for graduation. The College does not provide for make up time due to absenteeism. If a student fails to meet the attendance requirement he/she may be dropped from the program within the first two semesters.

Kits, Books, and Uniforms: Cosmetology students must purchase assigned books, uniforms and kits for the start of class. The kit is comprised of essential equipment and supplies needed to participate in class.

Health Forms: Must be complete at the start to participate and receive credit in laboratory and class.

CORI: All accepted students must undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information or other check. Depending on the findings, the student may or may not be allowed to continue in the program of study. This is also required by the Massachusetts Board of Registration, Division of Professional Licensure, Massachusetts Cosmetology upon entry and exit of the program.
