Psychology

PsychologyPsychology is the study of behavior and mental processes. The goal of psychology is to describe, understand predict and modify behavior. Most people who study psychology are interested in the helping professions or jobs that require people skills. There are many subfields in psychology, such as, clinical (diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders), health (understanding the mind-body relationship and promotion of wellness), forensics, and sports.

Studying psychology prepares students to prepare for entry-level positions, which require "people skills" (caseworker, counselor, aide, salesperson or other customer service positions). Other important job skills developed through the study of psychology include analytical skills, problem solving skill, and skill in writing and research.

Career options for those who pursue advanced study in psychology include teacher, (sharing knowledge), researcher (acquiring and generating knowledge), and, applied psychology (diagnosing and treating mental disorders) as practitioner such as counselor, therapist or psychologist.

Students interested in pursuing higher education in the field of psychology should consider taking the following courses as electives while at STCC:

PSYC-100 General Psychology
PSYC-325 Lifespan Human Growth and Development
PSYC-350 Adolescent Psychology
PSYC-400 Principles of Normal/Abnormal Psychology
