Things to Know about Adult Basic Education
What is Adult Basic Education?
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is class instruction for persons 18 and over who would like to obtain a General Educational Development (GED) diploma, which is a high school equivalency, or would like to enhance their reading, math, and language skills. Classes are free of charge and funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education. For more information, call the Adult Education Center at 755-4300.
What do I need to do to enter classes?
The first step is to complete an Application for Services at the STCC Adult Education Center (Building 27) any Monday through Friday during September through June between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and Monday through Thursday in July and August. If you need to complete the application in the evening, you may do so on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, until 7:00 p.m., September through June. Upon completion of the application, you will meet with someone in the ABE Program to discuss your application and our program.
Do I need to take a test to enter classes?
Yes, an entrance assessment is given to all prospective students so that we know which of our classes is the right one for you! But don't worry about these. Just do your best!
Do classes start immediately after I take the test?
It depends on if we have slots available in the class that would be the right class for you at the time you apply. We prefer to enroll students in a class immediately, but often there is a period during which you will be placed on a Wait List. Please know that you will be scheduled to begin classes as soon as there is an opening in the class you need.
How many class levels are there?
There are three levels: Adult Basic Education Level 1 (0-4.9 grade level), Adult Basic Education Level 2 (5.0- 8.9 grade level), and Adult Secondary Education (9.0-12.0 grade level).
Do you offer other classes?
Yes, we also offer a stand-alone GED Math Boot Camp class for those who have failed the GED math test.
What will I be learning in class?
You will study English grammar, math, reading, and writing skills in the first two levels. In addition, the GED class (Level 3) also includes science, social studies, and literature. The GED Math Boot Camp is intensive math instruction which covers GED math from start to finish.
When are classes held?
All classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Who are the staff?
The staff are professionally trained teachers with experience in adult education. They use a variety of teaching methods. Tutors are also available for extra help.
How long will I be in class before I get my GED?
That depends on the level at which you begin. Classes are self-paced, so the length of time varies with each individual. You must achieve certain benchmarks to advance to the next class. You proceed at your own rate of learning.
Will I need a textbook?
No, all textbooks will be provided for you with funds from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education.
Will I need supplies?
Yes, a Casio FX260 calculator, pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, etc.
