Schedule for Spring 2008

The Chicopee Savings Bank Endowment for Academic Excellence, The Office of Academic Affairs and the Honors Program at Springfield Technical Community College are pleased to announce the schedule of events for its Spring 2008 Ovations Series.  This educational and cultural special event series brings to the College locally and nationally acclaimed writers, artists, political figures, and experts in the fields of science and health.  All events are open to the public free of charge.  For additional information on this series, please contact Professor Gail Dunn at (413) 755-4260.

Robert Rivest, nationally acclaimed mime artist is back by popular demand!  His performance this semester will focus on “Literary Alive” and the joys of reading.  Appropriate for all ages so students, faculty and staff are encouraged to bring their children who are on vacation this week.

Author Jim Trelease will once again offer his witty and insightful talk on the importance of reading and, especially, reading aloud to children.  Trelease, internationally recognized expert on reading is the author of The New Read Aloud Handbook, Hey! Listen to This, and Let’s Read All About It.

The Annual Dorothy Jordon Pryor Lecture/Awards Ceremony honors an individual whose community spirit and contributions have established him/her as a “living treasure” much like Dorothy Pryor herself.  This year’s recipient is Dr. Gail Carberry, STCC graduate, former STCC Vice President for Grants and Development and current President of Quinnsigamond Community College.

Author and Springfield native, Carol O’Malley Gaunt will read from her memoir, Hungry Hill, a moving account of her mother’s death when Carol was thirteen, her father’s alcoholism, and growing up with seven brothers in the sixties in Springfield, MA.  This reading is important for all students of writing, literature, psychology and sociology.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.
