Welcome to the homepage for the STCC Counseling Center. We hope that these web pages will provide a useful guide for you to explore our numerous services and resources. In addition to these web pages, we encourage you to make an appointment to visit the Counseling Center to discuss in more detail any personal, academic or career issues you may have.
Open throughout the year, the Counseling Center is a student-oriented, confidential and supportive environment where students may receive free, short-term, individualized career, academic, and/or personal counseling and related services, as well as referrals to community agencies when appropriate. While appointments are preferred, the Counseling Center offers immediate response on a walk-in basis to any student in crisis.
Throughout the academic year, the Counseling Center staff offers workshops and presentations for students, both in and out of the classroom, on career, academic and personal topics. We offer screenings for Depression/Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Alcohol and Stress Management, as well as workshops and information tables on Study Skills, career planning and Counseling Center Resources. Each semester we participate in New Student Orientation where our focus is on effective Time Management. Lastly, we distribute two booklets through the Counseling Center that students find incredibly helpful. One, entitled “College Survival Guide”, is a resource for improving your study skills, starting the career planning process, and general information about being a successful student. The other, entitled “Stress Management” is a resource specifically to help you overcome personal and/or academic anxiety. We also have handouts in the Counseling Center on referral resources as well as a variety of mental health issues.
The Student Mentor Program falls under the aegis of the Counseling Center. Supervised by Shelby Hall-Gibbons, the Mentors are students in good academic standing at the college who have received specialized training to act as peer counselors, tour guides, orientation presenters, etc. They receive a small stipend. They have an office in Bldg 27 on the second floor. For more detailed information use the link for the Student Mentor Program.
For additional information or to ask a question, email your question to Online Advising/counseling, being sure to include the requested information, or schedule an appointment with a counselor by calling 413-755-4985

Mission
The Counseling Center's mission is to assist students to explore, define and accomplish personal, academic, and career goals. Dedicated to the enhancement of the spirit and quality of life of each member of the college community, the Counseling Center works to promote the dignity, worth, potential and uniqueness of every individual and their ability to be self-directed. We translate these beliefs into action by providing high quality individual and group counseling services, programming focused on the developmental needs of all college students, and consultative services to assist faculty and staff.
Confidentiality and its Limits
Underlying the counseling relationship is the principle of confidentiality. This principle assures you that the facts and opinions you reveal about yourself in the course of counseling will be held strictly private and will not be revealed to others without your prior written permission.
However, there are several exceptions to this principle, of which you need to be aware. These exceptions include:
- Professional consultation
- Child abuse/neglect
- Elder abuse/neglect
- Threatening to harm yourself
- Threatening to cause physical violence to another
- Legal cases related to:
- child custody
- hospitalization
- court-ordered evaluation
You are encouraged to discuss with your counselor any of the above issues for which you wish further clarification.
