Helping HandsThe Student Mentor Program

The Mentor Program has a two-fold purpose:

  • To develop strong student leaders who can assist the Counseling Center in offering outreach services on the STCC campus
  •  To broaden the range and impact of a positive group presence throughout the STCC campus by helping first year students make a smooth transition into college.

Mentors are responsible for:

  • Providing a positive role model.
  •  Providing a positive framework for constructive interaction between new students, student mentors, faculty, and staff.
  •  Attending training and development seminars.
  •  Greeting new students (mentees) during Orientation Days.
  •  Promoting the Mentor Program.
  •  Promoting awareness of the college culture, along with services and programs, available to new students.
  •  Leading campus tours.
  •  Encouraging each other to enhance leadership and interpersonal skills.
  •  Encouraging participation of mentees in various college events, such as: picnics, social events, athletic game nights, etc.
  •  Recognizing and recruiting new mentees for the program.
  •  Providing support and encouragement for the mentees by helping them understand the challenges and opportunities of the college, and encouraging opportunities for personal, academic, and/or social success.
  •  Maintaining confidentiality.

Mentors receive:

  • A $200 stipend per semester (for a total of $400 for the academic year), upon meeting certain requirements.

To qualify as a mentor one must:

  • Be a current STCC student in good academic standing.
  •  Demonstrate an ability to share knowledge, skills, and experiences with the mentee.
