Jamie Ruiz & Professor Connie Pettengill
Jamie Ruiz came to STCC "to become someone". "I wanted to inspire my three children and let them know they can be whoever they want to be. It took me a long time to get to where I am today. I left school in the 8th grade and faced many challenges as a young mother but I never gave up. I earned my GED and in 2005 I enrolled in the Medical Assistant Certificate program because I love helping people. Professor Connie Pettengill, the Chairperson of the Medical Assistant program, let me know right from the start that if I studied nothing could stop me from succeeding. She was straightforward and incredibly knowledgeable. Now that I've graduated I feel totally prepared for the medical field. My ultimate goal is to return to STCC to enter the Nursing program. Not only has STCC changed my life but I can already see the positive effects on my children. While I'd be doing my homework, my son would sit next to me to do his. He'd say "Mom, I don't like homework and studying but I'm doing it because you're doing it."
For Professor Pettengill students like Jamie are at the heart of what STCC is all about. "Jamie is a beautiful person inside and out. She is a model student who accomplished all this while raising a family and working over 20 hours a week. Jamie excelled in her classes and is now a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Jamie's story is truly inspirational."
