Designing a New Career
John Perella, Master Cabinet Maker with a specialty in Antique Reproduction, came to STCC with a desire to utilize his technical and design skills to create a second career. "I knew about STCC's reputation as a leader in technology education. The College's Mechanical Engineering Technology program was a perfect fit for me because I'm very interested in the design aspect of technology and how things will be made."
According to Gary Masciadrelli, Department Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, "The engineering discipline requires people who possess two key attributes: curiosity and attention to detail -- John has both of them. He was willing to try different methods of design in an effort to improve his knowledge. In addition, he can cover every detail that is required in engineering documentation. This will prove to be a benefit to any company seeking ISO certification. During on-campus interviews by area manufacturers, it was no surprise to find the companies fighting over hiring John."
John credits STCC faculty for his success. "Professor Masciadrelli inspired me to think independently and to apply the knowledge and resources I have gained at STCC to produce work that goes beyond my expectations. I've already accepted a position with Hamilton Sundstrand as a Senior Draftsman in the their Air Management Systems Division. What made a real difference for me at STCC is having professors who have all worked or are working in industry. They know what is going on in the real world currently. This is a tremendous advantage for students!
