Olive Kavila-Fields / Linda Harrington
Olive Kavila-Fields began her college education at a four-year college, but it wasn't until she came to STCC that her future dreams fell into place. "I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I enrolled at STCC. I knew I wanted to finish my education and set a good example for my kids. I was working two jobs, one as a personal care assistant and the other as an administrative assistant at an after-school program for troubled youth. I realized that I wanted to work in the school system and help young people whose home lives weren't stable. As a Liberal Arts Transfer major, I took classes that would prepare me to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a degree in Sociology. I was fortunate to meet Professor Linda Harrington who taught Fundamentals of Speech. She motivated me and went out of her way to give me life advice. When I was down, she brought me up. Being a wife and a mother like me, she would listen and understand without judgment. She gave me the confidence to pursue my dream of becoming a social worker. And, as coincidence would have it, I've been accepted to Elms College, Professors Harrington's alma mater.
Professor Harrington mentions another coincidence, "I also taught Olive's brother when he was a student at STCC. Like Olive he continued his education after STCC and graduated from Springfield College. In my experience, once one family member has a great experience at STCC, the word spreads. It's not uncommon to see parents and siblings in the same graduating class. As a professor in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, I've had the privilege of teaching so many students who have transferred on to prestigious colleges and universities. Students like Olive make this all worthwhile!
