Adaptive Computing Lab
Objectives
The purpose of the Adaptive Computing Technology lab on campus is to provide a variety of services to students with disabilities who can benefit from current technological advances that, when best utilized, can work to maximize student access.
Eligibility
The lab is available for use by any current student or STCC alumni with a disability who has completed an orientation to the equipment and the rules regarding use of the lab.
Available Technology
Currently (this page was last updated on November 13, 2007) the following is a partial listing of available equipment and services within the lab:
- Six Desktop PC Stations running Windows XP and MS Office 2003
- Power Mac G4 with MacOS9
- Networked Laser Printer
- Kurzweil 3000 Scanning/OCR Reading Station
- Zoomtext Xtra Level 2 Screen Magnification software with screen reading capabilities
- Kurzweil 1000 Scanning/OCR for blind users
- JAWS Screen Reader and Window Eyes screen reading software for blind users
- Outspoken Screen Reader for Mac
- Voice Recognition software including Dragon Dictate and Dragon Naturally Speaking, which represents both continuous and discrete recognition systems
- Closed circuit television (CCTV) which provides magnification of printed material
- Alternative keyboard and mouse devices
- Braille Translating Software and a Braille Printer
- Word Prediction Software

Services
- Individualized training on adaptive technology from technicians on a scheduled basis
- Free use of all equipment during normal working hours
- Technical support in a non-threatening computer environment
Hours of Service
The computer lab is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. An evaluation and training on specific adaptive technology tools, led by the technicians, must be completed by interested students prior to beginning any work on computers. You can call to make an appointment at (413) 755-4667.
