Sustainability at STCC - Goals

  • Obtain at least 30% of campus electricity from renewable resources by 2020, through the purchase of renewable power and/or Renewable Energy Credits from suppliers, and/or through the installation of on-site distributed generation. (MA Executive Order 484 section IV requires this.)
  • Create a strategy that will require all future campus construction be built to the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Plus standards or equivalent. (Massachusetts Executive Order 484 section VI requires all state buildings 20,000 sq. ft. or larger be built to LEED Plus standards.)
  • Establish an energy-efficient appliance procurement plan that will require Energy Star qualified appliances be purchased and used efficiently in every possible opportunity.  Such appliances include, but are not limited to, computers, printers, copiers, air conditioners, refrigerators, monitors, and other necessary campus equipment.  (Massachusetts Executive Order 484 section III requires all state agencies procure only Energy Star qualified appliances.)
  • Participate in waste management and minimization projects that will reduce overall waste; such programs will include recycling, using green chemicals and paper products throughout campus, enforcing email as the primary means of campus communication, and replacing paper resources with online alternatives whenever possible.
  • Install only efficient lighting, including LED, photo luminescent, and compact fluorescent lights, as well as other similar products.  Such lighting shall replace all incandescent and fluorescent lighting wherever possible.  (MA Executive Order 484 section III requires this.)
  • Encourage the use of public transportation, and provide access to such services, for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Design student action programs to encourage the conservation of electricity, heat, water consumption, and waste, as well as promote awareness of broader climate change and sustainability issues throughout the campus community.

Other energy targets listed in MA Executive Order 484 include:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2020, 80% by 2050, based on FY 2002 baseline
  • Reduce overall energy consumption by 35% by 2020, based on FY 2004 baseline and on a BTU /sq. ft. basis
  • Reduce potable water use by 15% by 2020, based on 2006 usage baseline
