Building 19

This building was completed during the Civil War. Originally built as a storehouse for wood used in gun stocks, it has also been known as a casern, a combination stable/barracks for cavalry, and may be one of the best remaining examples of this type of facility in the United States. In 1863, when the foundations were being dug, the remains of 12 soldiers buried in full regimentals were found, presumably soldiers quartered here during the War of 1812.
