Free Community Health Fair Scheduled for April 15
The public is invited to a free community health fair on Tuesday, April 15 at Springfield Technical Community College. Created by the senior Nursing class at STCC, the fair will be held in the gymnasium of Scibelli Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Giveaways, speakers, raffles, blood pressure and other screenings, and information on many health issues will be available throughout the Fair. Information booths will include:
Adolescent health
Dangers of tanning. Speaker Meghan Rothschild (11:00-2:00) will tell her story as a melanoma survivor; raffle of iPod shuffle and Ray Ban sunglasses
Asthma
Learn the facts about asthma in Springfield. Prizes for kids to strengthen their lungs; proper uses of medication.
Body enhancement
Information on tattooing and body piercing, free temporary tattoos; make an educated choice
Cardiovascular health
High blood pressure: the silent killer; screenings; heart healthy education; eat your way to a healthier heart with low salt and low fat diet
Child Safety
Fire prevention, poisoning prevention, auto safety. Firefighter from the Holden Fire Department will be available 10:00-2:00.
Diabetes
Risk factors and how to control diabetes; fill out a card for a free diabetic cookbook
Domestic violence
Springfield police officer will be on hand 10:00-2:00 to offer guidance to people who are, or know someone, experiencing domestic violence; checklist of things needed before ending an abusive relationship; numbers for resources.
Maternal health
Showing exercise videos; veggie/fruit trays to promote healthy eating during pregnancy; understanding the food guide pyramid; how to read food labels; normal growth of the baby; changes to a woman’s body during pregnancy.
Sexual health
Play “sex jeopardy” – test your knowledge of STDs, birth control, and more.
Smoking cessation
Information on how to quit, raffles of two 30-minute massages; checking blood pressure, lung sounds
Stress reduction
Get your hands massaged, learn deep breathing techniques; massage gift certificates will be raffled off every hour
