Olympian Gail Marquis to Speak at STCC for Black History Month;
will also present basketball clinic.
Gail A. Marquis, a member of the U.S. silver medal basketball team, will speak on Thursday, February 28 at Springfield Technical Community College, as part of the institution’s Black History Month program. From 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., Marquis will speak on “How to Get to the Top of Your Game; Learn to Win with the New Rules On and Off the Court.” The program is open to the public free of charge, and will be held in the theater of Scibelli Hall.
In the afternoon, Marquis will suit up and present a basketball clinic in the STCC gymnasium in Scibelli Hall, from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m. The clinic will be attended by the STCC’s women’s basketball team as well as several high school women’s teams.
When the Olympics first included women‘s basketball in 1976, Marquis, then a player for Queen’s College in New York, helped the U.S. to win a silver medal. She subsequently played for the New York Stars and the New Jersey Gems, in the Women’s Basketball League, the forerunner of today’s Women’s National Basketball Association. Marquis has been a broadcast color commentator for women’s basketball games at Rutgers and Penn State, has covered WNBA and New York Liberty games on SportsDesk for the Madison Square Garden Network, and is a featured analyst for the WNBA on the NBA Entertainment Network. She also maintains a successful career in brokerage, finance, and banking.
