Hartford Art School Graduate Students To Exhibit at STCC

An exhibit of work by nine Master of Fine Arts degree candidates at the Hartford Art School in West Hartford, Connecticut, will be presented at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) from March 25 through April 19.
Titled HAS/MFA@STCC, the show will be held in the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery, in building 28 at STCC, and is open to the public free of charge. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 12:30 to 4:30, and Saturday 10:00-2:00.
A reception for the artists will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the gallery. Larry Slezak, director of the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery and chair of the Fine Arts department at STCC, said, “Works in the exhibit include a variety of paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs relative to each artist’s creative focus and discipline.”
The artists are Luis Angulo, Anita Balkun, David Barsalou, Paul Batch, Susan Bradley, Daniel Buttrey, Joyce Conlon, Valerie Culbertson, and Stephanie Lauretano. The group includes teachers and artists from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Florida.
Founded in 1877, the Hartford Art School (HAS) is one of seven colleges within the University of Hartford. Slezak noted several connections between HAS and STCC or Springfield. STCC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, Stephen H. Keller, was Assistant Dean of the Hartford Art School before coming to STCC as Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Artist Mary Frey, who is director of the graduate program at HAS was responsible for setting up photography courses at STCC. Slezak credits David Barsalou with spearheading this exhibit; Barsalou is Visual Arts Dept. chairman at the High School of Commerce and is a 25-year educator in the Springfield Public Schools.
This exhibit is made possible by funding from Student Activities. For more information contact Slezak at 755-5258 or 755-5288.
