Laser Students at STCC to Present Senior Projects
Visiting high school students will meet graduating college students and view the senior project presentation at Springfield Technical Community College on Thursday, May 8 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The event will be held in Putnam Hall (Building 17) in room 612.
The STCC students, from the Laser Electro-Optics Technology program and the Electronic Systems Engineering Technology program, will present the following semester-long research projects which complete their two-year course of study:
- Fiber Optic Audio Link for MP3 Players
- Wind Power Generator
- Optical Kanban System
- Sensor-Based Driving Simulator
- Blue Light Blanket for Infant Jaundice Phototherapy
- Optical Integrating Spheres for Light Measurement
Students in Laser Electro-Optics Technology are recruited by major corporations such as Raytheon. Recently, staff from Northrop Grumman in Orlando, offering starting salaries of $30-$50,000 and generous relocation packages to Florida, came to STCC to talk with students. Program chair Nicholas Massa notes that most of the graduating students have already had job offers in the local area. The laser program covers laser systems, electronics, optics, and electro-optics, with industrial, medical, and scientific applications.
Graduates of the Electronic Systems Engineering Technology are prepared for positions in communications, control systems, circuit design, system design, systems testing, computer system design, medical systems, and materials testing.
