Program Description

This training program will provide you with entry-level job skills that will allow you to enter the health care field and prepare for the state board examination to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and receive your certification in CPR. This course is taught by Donna Whalen and Jane Runte, RNs with almost 30 years of combined experience in teaching and nursing.

This program is approved by the MA Division of Health Care Quality (Approval #91212P0512).

  • Safety and Emergency Procedures

  • Bed Bath and Feeding

  • Promoting Residents’ Independence and Respecting Residents’ Rights

  • Moving and Turning Patients

  • Certification Exam Review

Suggested Enrollment Process

With the requirements listed below, students can enroll online BUT MUST come to STCC Building 16, Room 146 with other information immediately!

To Enroll Online:

  1.  Click: ‘On Line Registration’ on the left side of this webpage.

  2. Click on Search and Register for Workforce Training Classes

  3. Type in ‘Nurse ’ and hit 'Submit"

  4. Carefully click the SELECT box for the course that you want to take. There may be several choices so make sure you select the right course and dates

  5. Enter in your personal and credit card information. Your receipt will be immediately emailed to you. It should have the Building and Classroom for the course.

    • If it does not, check with our office at 755 4225 a few weeks prior to the class to confirm the room numbers.

  6. Come to campus as soon as possible for CORI and Medical Clearance information. (see below)

To Enroll in Person:

Go to STCC Building 16, Room 146 to register for the course or call 755 4225

The course fee includes all required textbook (s) and materials, liability insurance, scrubs, and the CNA certification exam fee. Applications will be accepted on the basis of date received, degree of completion of required immunizations, and the background of the student. The full fee will be returned to any applicant who is not selected to participate in this program.

  1. Bring a photo ID, (for CORI/SORI)

  2.  Bring any of the required medical paperwork you may have already have on hand, (to start the Medical Clearance process, see below)

  3. Enroll in the course, Pay for the course

  4.  Take the Career 101 test, (if available)

  5.  Make sure that you fulfill ALL of the medical clearance requirements with your physician. Make copies of this information and mail or hand deliver the results as soon as possible to STCC, Workforce Training Building 16, Room 146 One Armory Square, Springfield, MA, 01102.  (See below)


  1. At least 18 years of age within 3 weeks of the class start date.

  2. English grammar, writing, and speaking skills equivalent to at least the 8th grade level (Testing required for all candidates)

  3. Satisfactory report on a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI)/Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check to be conducted by the College. Students MUST come the office with a current photo ID to complete this paperwork.

  4. Students enrolled in the School of Health and Patient Simulation (Nursing, Dental, Medical Imaging, Medical Assisting, Rehabilitation Therapies, Cosmetology, etc.), Early Childhood Education, or non-credit healthcare programs (CNA, EMT, Phlebotomy) are required to submit vaccination records.

    • Tdap within 10 years

    • Immunity to measles (two live-vaccine doses or positive titer results)

    • Immunity to mumps (two live-vaccine doses or positive titer results)

    • Immunity to rubella (two live-vaccine doses or positive titer results)

    • Immunity to hepatitis B (three vaccine doses or positive titer results)

    • Immunity to varicella: (Two doses of Varicella vaccine or positive titer results.)

    • Tuberculosis screening

      • Two Mantoux tests (PPD), the first within the past year, the second no more than a year previous to the first (2-step)

      • or T-Spot blood test within the past year

    • Two Mantoux tests (PPD), the first within the past year, the second no more than a year previous to the first (2-step)

    • If the student has a history of a positive tuberculosis test, a Chest X-ray is required within the last 2 years and an annual tuberculosis questionnaire must be completed
      Students must have a minimum of a TB verification prior to classes starting

  5. A physical exam (form attached below) is required from each student enrolled in a health field, Early Childhood Education, or who participates in athletics. Students must have had a physical exam within the last year, prior to the start of classes.

    • If a student does not have a medical provider for this physical exam, they can obtain an exam from STCC Health Services for a cost of $ 50.00. (Please contact 755-4385 to make arrangements)

  6. Students must have documentation that ALL immunization requirements have been met prior at least 30 days prior to the clinical sessions. (It is anticipated that the clinical component for EMT will begin within approximately 30 days after the start of the program.)

    • Any student that does not meet this requirement will not be able to remain in the course and will be withdrawn from the program. Note that certain medical clearances may take several weeks to complete.

    Health History Forms & Requirements

    Health History Form:
    All students are asked to submit a Health History Form each year. This form lists medications, allergies, emergency contacts, etc.

    Health Record Requirements
    All students enrolled either in a health field or Early Childhood Education must submit immunization records. This form lists the requirements.

    Student Physical Exam Form:
    All students enrolled either in a health field or Early Childhood Education must submit a record of a recent physical exam. This form is also for student athletes.

    Tuberculosis Questionnaire:
    This form is for students that have a history of a positive tuberculosis test. This form must be submitted annually.
