My mentor, Professor Guillory, pushed me academically. He inspired me to dream big but not to forget that I’d need ambition to make my big dreams come true.
“I was born in Guyana and moved to the United States when I was very young. Like many, my life took an unexpected turn which created an opportunity for my family to start fresh. We decided to move back to Guyana where I later completed high school.
Returning to the U.S., my family settled in Springfield. I began taking classes at STCC and became very involved in campus life when I was elected as Student Body President! The new position allowed me to intern for the Public Higher Education Network of MA (PHENOM) lobbying for increased funding for public higher education. With a new-found confidence I began to speak publicly at events, and my opinions were well received. I began to think about a career as a journalist.
STCC was my second chance to recreate a school experience, as it was tough for me to find myself in high school. My mentor, Professor Guillory, pushed me academically. He inspired me to dream big but not to forget that I’d need ambition to make my big dreams come true. I’ve been accepted into the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where I’ll be majoring in Communications and Journalism. My career dream is to work for Good Morning America.” Juhi Dasrath
“Juhi is destined to do great things. I have no doubt her passion, her dedication, and her civic engagement will transfer with her to the University of Massachusetts.” J. Anthony Guillory, Ph.D., Professor of HistorySee all Success Stories
