English for Entrepreneurs
WLIW-005 English for Entrepreneurs
Hours: 60
Fee: Free to the public including books and materials
Instruction: Online/Distance
Program Description
This course will be taught virtually via ZOOM and it is designed for business owners, entrepreneurs, and adults in Springfield and surrounding communities. Participants will learn English in the context of managing a business.
Vocabulary will cover marketing, management, accounting, and legal terms frequently used in casual conversations. As part of this class, participants will be asked to create a business pitch. Each participant will be assigned an STCC tutor to support their learning as needed. The goal of the course is to enable micro-business owners/employees and aspiring entrepreneurs to improve their English skills in order to expand their markets, better access business assistance resources, and help invigorate local economies.
Prior to starting the course, STCC will assess (phone screening, reading, and writing sample) each participant to determine English fluency at an intermediate or higher Educational Functioning Level (EFL).
The STCC instructor(s) will use or adapt the E4IE curriculum developed by English for New Bostonians. Instruction will include listening, speaking, reading, and writing in alignment with the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards.
