Program Description
The Oil Burner Technician Test Prep & Certificate program prepares participants for careers in the heating and energy services industry while supporting entry into Massachusetts oil burner licensing pathways. Through hands-on training and industry-focused instruction, students build the technical knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and safety practices needed to work with modern heating systems and fuel equipment.
Participants gain practical experience with oil burner systems, heating controls, combustion equipment, and hydronic heating technologies. The program also introduces heat pump and mini-split fundamentals to support workforce readiness in today’s evolving clean energy sector.
Students are introduced to:
- Oil burner operation and combustion system fundamentals
- Heating controls, electrical diagnostics, and troubleshooting
- Hydronic heating systems and system tune-ups
- Mechanical maintenance and code-compliant installation practices
- Fire safety standards and fuel system regulations
- Massachusetts BPV and 527 CMR 01 licensing requirements
- NFPA 31 standards for oil-burning equipment and fuel systems
- Heat pump and mini-split system fundamentals
- Workplace safety practices, PPE, and hazard recognition
- Licensing exam preparation and career pathway guidance
Participants also receive support understanding apprenticeship expectations, including working under a licensed technician, and guidance through the Massachusetts licensing application and certification process.

Prerequisites/Requirements
- Participants must be 16 years or older
- High School Diploma preferred
- MA Resident
- Completion of the Bridge to High Efficiency Energy module or 12-18 Months of experience as Oil Burner/HVAC apprentice
