Program Description

The  Information Technology (IT) - MassSTEP Program at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) is a comprehensive, hands-on career training program designed to prepare adult learners for entry-level positions in the technology field. The course combines practical IT skills, professional certification preparation, and contextualized foundational academic instruction into a single, supportive learning environment.

Students in this program build direct technical skills, work toward the industry-recognized CompTIA Tech+ certification, and receive targeted support for academic skills, technical vocabulary, and high school equivalency.

Student Attending This Course Will Receive:

1. Technical Training & CompTIA Tech+ Certification

The primary focus of the program is building practical computer and technology skills. Through hands-on lab exercises, students gain experience in core technical areas:

  • Hardware & Systems: Understanding computer processing, component function, and system operations.
  • Networking & Internet: Basic concepts in network setup, connectivity, and online navigation.
  • Cybersecurity & Safety: Essential data protection, secure online habits, and system safety practices.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Identifying, diagnosing, and fixing everyday hardware and software issues.
  • Certification Exam Prep: Direct test preparation to help students successfully earn the CompTIA Tech+ certification, an entry-level credential recognized by employers.

2. College & Career Readiness

The curriculum aligns with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) and the Massachusetts Digital Literacy Standards to prepare students for both higher education and modern workplace expectations:

  • Digital Literacy & Technical Skills: Students master essential computer operations, digital communication, and online tools needed across higher education and modern industries.
  • Workforce Skills & Etiquette: Key professional skills—including critical thinking, problem-solving, workplace communication, and professional conduct—are embedded into daily lessons.
  • Career Development & Job Search: Dedicated Education and Career Advisors assist students with résumé and cover letter writing, interview practice, and exploring local career pathways in technology.

3. High School Equivalency Prep (HiSET / GED)

Academic instruction is integrated directly into the technology curriculum so students can advance their general education alongside their technical training:

  • Contextualized Learning: Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies topics are taught using real-world IT scenarios.
  • Test Preparation: Practice tests, study strategies, and progress tracking (via MAPT assessments) prepare students to complete their HiSET or GED exams.
  • Targeted Vocabulary Support: Instructors provide direct assistance with complex technical terms, IT terminology, and computer concepts.
  • Workplace Communication: Guidance is embedded throughout the program to help learners master professional language usage and workplace communication.
