Program Description

The HVAC/R Technician Certificate – Heat Pump & Mini-Split Installation and Service program prepares participants for careers in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry while supporting workforce development in clean energy and building electrification. Through hands-on training and industry-focused instruction, students build the technical knowledge, installation experience, troubleshooting skills, and safety practices needed to work with modern high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.

Participants gain practical experience with heat pump and mini-split installation, refrigeration systems, electrical controls, airflow optimization, and system commissioning. The program also introduces advanced HVAC technologies and energy-efficient applications to support workforce readiness in today’s evolving clean energy sector.

Students are introduced to:

  • Heat pump operation, refrigeration cycle, and thermodynamics fundamentals
  • Mini-split system installation, startup, and commissioning procedures
  • Electrical wiring, controls, and HVAC system diagnostics
  • Refrigerant line installation, charging, and safe refrigerant handling practices
  • Airflow, ductwork, and system performance optimization
  • Preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and component servicing
  • Equipment sizing, site assessment, and system selection principles
  • Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF), hybrid, and geothermal HVAC systems
  • Building codes, regulations, and energy efficiency standards
  • Workplace safety practices, PPE, and hazard recognition
  • Industry certification preparation and HVAC/R career pathway guidance

Participants also receive guidance on workforce expectations, professional practices, and pathways toward industry-recognized certifications aligned with high-demand HVAC/R installation and service careers.

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • Participants must be 16 years or older
  • High School Diploma preferred 
  • MA Resident
  • Completion of the Bridge to High Efficiency Energy module or 12-18 Months of experience as Oil Burner/HVAC technician
