Program Description

This intensive two-week hybrid course is designed to train on-the-job dental assistants in the essential principles and practices of infection control. Combining online instruction with hands-on experience in a school-based dental clinic, this program provides a comprehensive overview of infection control protocols required in modern dental settings.

Participants will learn proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), sterilization techniques, chair and waterline maintenance, disinfection procedures, autoclave operation and upkeep, spore testing, and other critical aspects of maintaining a safe clinical environment.

Upon successful completion, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet infection control standards and will be prepared to pursue state certification as part of the dental assisting licensure requirements.

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of this two-week hybrid course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent or reduce the risk of occupational exposure in the oral healthcare setting
  • Understand and apply hand hygiene protocols as a foundational component of infection prevention
  • Implement sterilization and disinfection techniques, including autoclave operation, spore testing, and maintenance of dental equipment and treatment areas
  • Develop and follow comprehensive office infection control and exposure control protocols to minimize healthcare-associated infections in dental environments
  • Perform waterline and dental chair maintenance procedures in accordance with infection control guidelines
  • Understand and incorporate engineering and work practice controls that isolate or eliminate hazards in the workplace
  • Apply environmental infection control measures to create a safe clinical setting for both patients and providers.
  • Explain and implement transmission-based precautions to prevent the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis.
  • Follow appropriate post-exposure protocols and documentation procedures to reduce the risk of infection following occupational exposure.
  • Prepare for state-required certification in dental infection control as part of the dental assisting licensure process.
