Laser Optics Technology Showcase
When: 5/20/26, 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Location: Putnam (B17), room 612
If you’re interested in working with advanced technology, building real hands-on skills, and entering a high-demand field, we’d like to introduce you to something different, Laser Optics Technology (Electro-Optics).
It’s not a field most people hear about early on, but it should be. Lasers are behind a lot of things you already know and use every day:
- The “stone-washed” look on modern jeans is often done with lasers instead of chemicals
- Your smartphone depends on laser-based manufacturing to cut, weld, and assemble precision components
- Fiber optics, powered by laser light, carry the internet and data you use constantly
Even advanced systems, like laser-based technologies used to disable drones—rely on the same core skills you can learn here at STCC. These aren’t future technologies, they’re happening right now. And right here in New England, there are many companies within commuting distance of Springfield actively hiring skilled laser technicians to build and maintain these systems. These are high-paying, high-skill careers with strong long-term growth and advancement potential.
At Springfield Technical Community College, our Laser and Electro-Optics Technology (LEOT) program is designed specifically to prepare you for these opportunities:
- 100% job placement for graduates, many students are hired before finishing the program
- Hands-on training using real laser systems, optics, and fiber equipment
- Small, focused program with direct access to instructors and lab time
Flexible pathways:
- 1-year certificate option
- 2-year associate degree
- Transfer opportunities to 4-year engineering programs
This is not a lecture-heavy or math-intensive program, you’ll spend your time working directly with lasers, aligning optical systems, and building real technical skills that employers are actively looking for. Any math you need is taught step-by-step in the context of real lab work, you don’t need an advanced math background to succeed.
You’re Invited: Laser & Photonics Lab Showcase
We’re hosting a Laser & Photonics Lab Showcase where you can:
- Tour our state-of-the-art laser and photonics labs
- See live demonstrations of laser systems used in industry
- Learn about career paths, salaries, and job opportunities
- Meet Professor Andrew Held and ask questions directly
Dates/Time: May 13th (4:30-6:30 p.m.) and May 20th (4:30-6:30 p.m.)
Location: Springfield Technical Community College – Laser & Optics Labs - Putnam Hall (B17), Room 612 (sixth floor)
If you’re currently waitlisted in another program or just exploring your options, this is an opportunity worth checking out.
Skilled laser technicians are in high demand, and most people don’t even know this career path exists.
To learn more, contact or simply attend the event.
