Internship Process

Internships provide opportunities for you to explore jobs/careers, gain professional experience, professional references, and give you a better sense of where and with whom you would like to work. Students may be eligible to receive academic credit as well as funding for participating in an internship.

  1. Identify and invite a faculty advisor to design and oversee an internship.
  2. Identify and confirm an employer/organization to host the internship relative to your certificate, degree, and or professional development.
  3. Download and complete the internship contract and application prior to the start of your internship.
  4. Review all materials for appropriate information and signatures (incomplete applications and contracts will not be accepted).
  5. Submit completed materials to the Director of Career Services (nandary2401@stcc.edu).

Students are encouraged to set up an Internship Advising appointment with a Career Counselor in the Career Services Office by calling: 413-755-5419 or email: nandary2401@stcc.edu

Requirements of an Internship Site

The Career Services Office at STCC defines an appropriate internship site as follows:

  1. For a credit-bearing unpaid internship, a student's hours of work are not to exceed 150 hours in one semester.
  2. The internship site must be a legitimate business or professional site. The site cannot be in a private residence unless the residence is legally zoned for the purpose of conducting that specific business in which the student will be involved.
  3. The internship site must be an established organization of business for a minimum of one year.
  4. The participating employer must abide by STCC’s policy on discrimination and sexual harassment.
  5. All internships must fulfill real company needs at the internship site. Likewise, the work assigned to students should be academically resonant and give students the opportunity to aptly apply concepts learned in the classroom. Routine photocopying and envelope stuffing will not be considered a viable internship opportunity.
  6. The intern’s responsibility should result in a measurable project or academic outcome by the end of the internship period.
  7. The organization should be prepared to reasonably modify the internship according to the student abilities.
