"Where We At" by the Black Women Artists Collective is on display from February 14 to April 10.

The story of “Where We At” begins in 1971, a time marked by revolution, shifting politics, and a growing assertion of Black cultural identity. Three young women—Kay Brown, Dindga McCannon, and Faith Ringgold—living in Harlem as artists, mothers, sisters, and teachers—responded by forming a Black women artists’ collective as they navigated the intersections of race, class, and gender. They did so to address the lack of focus and limited resources for Black women’s artistic pursuits within a predominantly male Black art world and a mostly white downtown art scene.

These insights inspired their inaugural exhibition, “Where We At”—Black Women Artists, 1971, at the Acts of Art Gallery in New York’s West Village. The exhibition was the first to present Black women as professional artists rather than background figures.
