Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are officers at STCC "real" Police Officers?
Yes, officers appointed to the STCC Police department are in fact fully sworn Police Officers. Officers that are sworn police have had to attend and successfully complete prescribed training at the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council and/or the Massachusetts State Police Academy. Officers have all the powers of arrest, police authority, and share the same responsibilities as their municipal and state police counterparts and exercise full police jurisdiction on all property owned, leased, or rented by the college, as described in MGL 22c. s.63. The STCC Police Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round, the same way a city or town police department does.
The STCC Police does have a compliment of non-sworn security staff that provides an "additional set of eyes" to the police department. Security officers provide parking lot security, and also patrol buildings and areas on foot.
2. How do I call the STCC Police for emergencies and for general service?
All emergencies should be reported by dialing 3911 from any campus phone.
If you do call for an emergency, be prepared to tell the dispatcher what type of emergency you are reporting, the location of where the emergency assistance is needed, and your name. Typically a dispatcher will ask you to remain on the line to obtain as much pertinent information about the emergency unless it unsafe for you to remain in the line.
3. How do I file a police report of an incident that occurs on campus or STCC property?
You can file a report with the STCC Police by coming into the main police building #9,which is located behind building #17. The main police building is typically staffed from 9AM - 5PM. The alternate location would be the STCC Police Dispatch Center, which is situated at the main gate on Federal Street. The dispatch center is manned 24 hours a day, days a week, all year round. You can also summon an officer to respond to a particular location by dialing 4220 on campus phones, or 755-4220 from cellular phones.
4. Will the STCC Police provide escorts to my vehicle from campus?
Yes, the STCC Police Department operates shuttle bus service to and from lots 3, 4, and PVTA. Shuttle bus service operates from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Evening shuttle service is offered from lot-c on campus, lot 2, and PVTA. Shuttle bus evening hours are 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM Monday through Thursday. If you feel you are in need of a police escort for safety purposes, the STCC Police will gladly assist. All you have to do is call 4220 from any campus phone and request a safety escort. The STCC Police will not provide transportation to any locations off campus other than parking lots.
5. How do I obtain a parking permit?
A student who has enrolled in a day class(es) and requires parking for their vehicle must have a decal to park in any STCC off campus parking lot. There are no exceptions to this policy. The college maintains 4 off campus parking lots. Security is provided for all parking areas between 7:00am and 6:00pm Monday through Friday.
To request a decal, go to Parking & Transportation. Parking permits are mailed to your address.
A student must have paid in full or made financial arrangements to be eligible for a decal. Availability of parking is determined on a "first come, first serve" basis. If a lot becomes full, the next available lot is used as an alternative. Evenings and Saturdays on campus parking is available with a campus hang tag from the Registrar's office.
6. Where do I pay for a parking/traffic citation?
All parking/traffic citations can be returned via mail and paid at the cashiers office in building #15. All STCC parking/traffic citations are pre addressed, envelopes.
7. How can I appeal a parking/traffic citation?
You can either download the Parking Ticket Appeal Form or you may come in to the STCC Main Police building #9 located behind building #17 and obtain and fill out the form there.
8. What do I do if my vehicle is towed from campus?
It depends on the reason for the vehicle being towed. If the vehicle was towed because of a parking violation, you will need to contact Bach Towing at 413-525-2100. You will have to make arrangement on payment with Bach towing for the release of your vehicle. If your vehicle was police towed because of non payment of parking/traffic citations, you will need to contact the STCC Police prior to contacting Bach Towing, as your vehicle will not be released until authorized by the STCC Police.
9. If I lock my keys inside my car, will the STCC Police be able to get into my car?
No, the STCC Police are not authorized to perform lock out services. However, if a registered owner to a vehicle can prove ownership of a vehicle, and deem that there is an "emergency" reason to gain entry to the vehicle, said vehicle owner may sign a damage waiver, and authorize an STCC Police Officer to gain access to the vehicle. The alternative is, the STCC Police will gladly contact a towing company of your choice to respond and assist with your lockout.
10. Is there a Lost & Found at STCC?
Yes, the STCC Police manage Lost & Found. Lost & Found items are kept at the Main Police Building for up to 90 days. If the item's ownership can be identified, the STCC Police will attempt to locate the original owner and notify them of the item. Not all items Lost & Found are turned into the STCC Police. Other campus departments will sometimes retain items that are left behind.
