STCC veteran students awarded textbook scholarships

Two veterans attending Springfield Technical Community College received early holiday gifts in the form of scholarships to help cover textbooks. The Better Business Bureau serving Central and Western Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut awarded $500 scholarships to Allan Cangelosi of West Springfield and Paetron Sumlin of Springfield.

STCC partners with AMR to offer free EMT training beginning Jan. 25

In partnership with American Medical Response, Inc., Springfield Technical Community College will offer a free emergency medical technician course starting Jan. 25. AMR will pay tuition and provide EMT work opportunities for students who enroll in the STCC EMT program. Graduates of the program will agree to begin work at AMR. The fee is normally $1,099 for the course, which runs on most Tuesday mornings from Jan. 25 through May 21. The hybrid class includes some online instruction.

STCC offers free classes for early childhood educators

Springfield Technical Community College is offering a number of free training opportunities for early childhood educators looking to advance their qualifications. The free seats are for new and existing early childhood educators. They need to complete an Individual Professional Development Plan to be eligible.

STCC 4-week online winter session starts Dec. 23

Springfield Technical Community College will offer a four-week online winter session with classes running Thursday, Dec. 23, through Wednesday, Jan. 19. The winter session classes can be used as electives at both community colleges and four-year colleges and universities, said Richard Greco, dean of the School of Liberal and Professional Studies at STCC.

STCC Career and Transfer Fair opens door to opportunities

Students flocked to the Back to Business Career and Transfer Fair at Springfield Technical Community College on Dec. 8 looking for opportunities to get a foot in the door at area businesses. Employers with a need to fill positions said they were thrilled to meet STCC students and other fair attendees to find out if they were a good fit. The fair also attracted representatives from area colleges who helped students with questions about transferring to get their bachelor’s degrees

Tim Wagner is serving on the School Committee in Chicopee while attending STCC as a full-time student. Wagner talks about his love for serving his community and passion for technology. He studies computer information technologies at STCC.

STCC graphic communications and photography program wins accreditation

Springfield Technical Community College’s Graphic Communications and Photography program earned national accreditation in six areas after a comprehensive review. Lara Sharp, dean of the School of STEM, said earning accreditation is significant and reflects the high quality of a program.

STCC receives $55,000 from Community Foundation of Western Mass

Springfield Technical Community College received two grants worth $55,000 from the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. A $30,000 Flexible Funding Grant awarded to the STCC Foundation will be used to boost the student empowerment fund, which was created as a resource for students facing a variety of barriers standing in the way of their ability to complete their education.

STCC student leads collection drive for Afghan refugees

When she heard the news about Afghan refugees arriving in Western Massachusetts, Springfield Technical Community College student Aminah Bergeron decided to take action. Bergeron, vice president of the Student Government Association at STCC, brainstormed with fellow students ways to help the refugees. They agreed to organize a donation drive to collect necessities for newly arrived families
