Program Description

STEM Starter Academy is partnering with Regreen Springfield, a community based non-profit organization, the City of Springfield, and the US Forest Service to offer a virtual Citizen Science program of environmental awareness and stewardship in Springfield.  This online program is led by UMass professor Dr. David Bloniarz and supported by several guest speakers of prominence. This civic engagement opportunity utilizes uses the collective knowledge of our students and our community to identify research questions, collect and analyze data, interpret results, make new discoveries, and develop technologies and applications pertaining to solve our environmental conservation challenges.

This program includes 10 weeks of online discussions and lectures. Students will have the opportunity to participate in competitions and present their findings in a research poster in a national undergraduate research conference. Students will receive a certificate and stipend upon successful completion.

Student Success and Testimonials

This program opened my eyes to the environmental challenges in our community and it was exciting to be part of a research team. My favorite field trip was when we planted trees around Springfield!Citizen Science participant.
